Depression Therapy in Dubai

For adults who have felt flat, heavy or far away from themselves for longer than a bad week.

People rarely arrive saying the word depression. They say they are tired all the time, that nothing tastes of anything, that they are fine at work and empty at home. Often they have been waiting for it to lift on its own. Sometimes it has, for a while, and then it came back.

Depression: more than a low mood

The World Health Organization separates a depressive episode from ordinary ups and downs: low mood or a loss of interest and pleasure that lasts most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks. Alongside it often come poor concentration, guilt or low self-worth, hopelessness, changes in sleep and appetite, and tiredness that rest does not touch.

WHO is also clear on two points that matter here. There are effective treatments for depression, and psychological treatments are the first treatments for it, with cognitive behavioural therapy among those it names.

What people notice first

  • Waking up tired, or not sleeping at all

  • Losing interest in things that used to matter

  • Doing the minimum at work and having nothing left for anyone else

  • A voice that turns every small mistake into proof of something

  • Eating much more or much less than usual

  • Pulling back from friends and family, then feeling guilty about it

  • Thinking that people would be better off without you

Working with Ms. Sarah El Nabulsi

Ms. Sarah El Nabulsi is a DHA-licensed clinical psychologist (License No. DHA-75083705) in Dubai who works with adults experiencing depression. She has more than 15 years of private practice in the UAE and sees clients in Arabic, English and French, in person at Dr Reuter Medical Center in Jumeirah or online for people living in the UAE. Her approach is integrative and biopsychosocial: it starts with an assessment of mood, sleep, work, relationships and health together, then uses cognitive behavioural therapy to work on the patterns that keep depression going, such as withdrawal, rumination and self-criticism. Where medication may help, clients are referred to a psychiatrist or their doctor, and therapy can continue alongside it. She also works with couples when depression is affecting the relationship. Bookings are made by WhatsApp on +971 50 821 5437.

Who this is for

Adults who have felt low, flat or empty for weeks or months. People whose depression sits alongside anxiety, burnout, grief or a relationship that has ended. People who have tried therapy before and want a clearer structure this time. Partners can also come together when one person's depression is weighing on the relationship.

How depression therapy works

01

An assessment that looks at everything

The first sessions look at mood, sleep, energy, work, relationships, health and history together. They also check for things that change the plan, such as periods of unusually high energy, or physical causes your GP should rule out. An integrative, biopsychosocial approach treats these as one picture rather than separate problems.

02

A plan you agree on

You decide together what to work on first. For some people that is getting a routine and some movement back into the week. For others it is the self-critical thinking that keeps pulling them under.

03

The active work

Sessions use cognitive behavioural therapy to work on the patterns that keep depression going: withdrawing, avoiding, ruminating, and the harsh way people talk to themselves. Progress is reviewed openly as you go. Where medication could help, you are told so plainly and pointed to a psychiatrist or your doctor, and the two can run side by side.

04

Staying well

The last phase is about the warning signs that tend to come before a dip, and what you will do when you notice them, so that a hard month does not have to become a lost year.

FAQ

Q1: What does depression therapy involve?

A: Depression therapy is regular, structured sessions with a clinical psychologist that work on what keeps the depression going. It starts with an assessment of your mood, sleep, energy, work, relationships and health, so the plan fits the whole picture. Most of the work then uses cognitive behavioural therapy: gradually bringing back activity and routine, noticing the thoughts that drag you down and testing them, and changing habits such as withdrawing or ruminating. Sessions also look at the practical pressures around you. With Ms. Sarah El Nabulsi the approach is integrative and biopsychosocial, and sessions are in Arabic, English or French, in Jumeirah or online for people living in the UAE.

Q2: Who is the best psychologist in Dubai for depression?

A: There is no single best psychologist for depression in Dubai, because the right fit depends on you, what the depression looks like and what else is going on. Look for a DHA licence, experience with depression in adults, a clear plan rather than open-ended talking, a willingness to involve a psychiatrist when medication may help, and a language you are comfortable in. Ms. Sarah El Nabulsi is a DHA-licensed clinical psychologist in Dubai with more than 15 years of private practice who works with adults and couples affected by depression, in Arabic, English and French, using cognitive behavioural therapy within an integrative, biopsychosocial approach.

Q3: Do I need medication for depression?

A: Not always, and it is a decision to make with a doctor rather than alone. The World Health Organization describes psychological treatments as the first treatments for depression and says antidepressants are not needed for mild depression. For moderate and severe depression, medication can be combined with psychological treatment. A psychiatrist or your doctor is the right person to assess whether medication would help you. If you already take medication, therapy can work alongside it, and you should never stop or change a prescription without speaking to the person who prescribed it. Therapy sessions can help you think through the options calmly.

Q4: How do I know if it is depression or just a low patch?

A: The main differences are how long it lasts and how much it takes over. A low patch usually lifts within days and leaves room for things you still enjoy. Depression, as the World Health Organization describes it, means low mood or a loss of interest and pleasure most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks, often with changes in sleep, appetite, energy and concentration, and with guilt or hopelessness. If that sounds familiar, an assessment is worth booking rather than waiting it out.

Q5: Should I see a psychologist or a psychiatrist for depression?

A: Often both can be part of the plan. A clinical psychologist provides psychological therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, which the World Health Organization lists among the first treatments for depression. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose, prescribe and monitor medication when it is needed, for example when depression is moderate or severe. Many people start with a psychologist and are referred to a psychiatrist if medication may help, and the two then work side by side. If you are unsure which route fits you, the page Psychologist or Psychiatrist? on this site explains the difference.

Q6: How many sessions will I need?

A: It depends on how long the depression has been there, how severe it is and what else is happening in your life. Rather than promising a number, the first sessions set out a plan, and you review progress together regularly. Some people come weekly for a period and then space sessions out as things settle. Others with a longer history work over a longer time. You will always know what you are working on and why, and you can ask at any point how the work is going, whether the plan should change, and whether a psychiatrist should be involved.

Q7: Is depression therapy available online?

A: Yes, for clients living in the UAE. Online sessions follow the same structure as sessions in the room, and some people find them easier on days when leaving the house feels like too much. Sessions are in Arabic, English or French. In-person sessions are at Dr Reuter Medical Center in Jumeirah, Dubai, Monday to Saturday from 9am to 8pm, and some people combine the two. To book either, message the team on WhatsApp at +971 50 821 5437. Online therapy is not an emergency service.

Q8: Is what I share in sessions confidential?

A: Yes. What you discuss in sessions is kept confidential, within the limits that apply to every licensed clinician in the UAE. Those limits mainly concern serious risk to your safety or someone else's, and they are explained to you at the start, so nothing comes as a surprise. You decide what you bring into the room and at what pace. Sessions follow DHA regulations and professional ethical standards. Many people find it easier to talk about depression once they know exactly how their information is handled, so ask about anything that worries you in the first session.
