One of the most common beliefs I encounter in my clinical work is that children are too young to have real emotions — that feelings are an adult matter. I want to respectfully challenge that entirely. The whole of a child's adult life rests on what happens in early childhood.
In many Arab homes, authority means fear. The father is respected because he is feared. Rules are followed because of what happens if they aren't. I understand this system. I grew up in the same culture. And I believe it needs to change — not because it lacks love, but because it produces adults who are harder to reach.
